How’s your summer goin' so far? Well, we have been jazzin up a “Storm” with Norman Brown’s Summer Storm~ The band is smokin!!!! Norman Brown, Phil Perry, Brenda Russell, and Gail Jhonson, just to name a few! Here’s some fun pics from our previous shows…
Performing the Anthem for the Padres
Also, had a blast performing the "National Anthem" for the Padres in San Diego!
Working on my next album!
This summer has been a great time to reconnect with friends and family including my mentor and producer, Paul Brown. Lately we’ve been in the creative stages, writing and recording music.
We’re about half way through my third album!! I can’t believe how fast time flies. I can still remember when I was waiting for "Tequila Moon" to be released, a little over 2 years ago!
I know you guys are gonna luv the new album! It has a kinda funky Brazilian jazz vibe to it with some Paul Brown guitars, sizzilin' sax and fun vocals too!
Lastly I wanted to share with you the joyful part about being an artist…recently I was touched by this kind note:
“Hey Jessy, Just wanted to Thank You!! Two Years Ago, you played the Jazz Fest in San Antonio, TX. My daughter met you backstage and you told her she was beautiful and she has never forgotten it. 2 weeks after she saw you, she ended up in the hospital and almost lost her life due to an infection in her heart. I can tell you that as she laid in PICU , she said, "Dad, we're gonna miss the JazzFest".....it broke my heart, but Thank God She's completely healed now....she starts school in August has has elected to learn how to play SAX!!!!!!! I think you had a little to do with that and I am GRATEFUL to you. May God continue to Bless you as you inspire other young girls around the world to pursue their dreams.“
How’s it goin? I’m having a fun summer with friends and family- as some of you already know my dad has miraculously survived cancer! We are very happy and blessed for his health.
Also, had an opportunity to visit with my Mom for Mothers Day and see my sister too!
Comin up this weekend I am joyed to announce our concert in Tucson!

New Press Articles: Latina Style MagazineCover Story; Latinas in the Jazz WorldFeb 2010
"She’s Latina, and plays the sax and sings and dances, and has that particular passion and rhythm.’ It’s very rewarding to be the kind of artist that reflects what I really am: I am a Latina, and I’m very proud of my parents and where they came from and how hard they worked to provide opportunities for my sister and me.”
Java Jazz Fest:
Being in a third world country reminded me how fortunate we are to live in a place with so many amenities. Simple things like drinking water or air conditioning can easily be taken for granted.
I also found that the Indonesian fans were completely sweet and embraced our culture…upon arriving in Jakarta we were invited to a special Dinner Party at the US Embassy.

David Gibson, Editor of Saxophone Journal, who is notoriously stingy when it comes to certifying saxophonists as talented, recently wrote, “Jessy J is truly a gifted and talented artist. You’ll notice I didn’t say musician. Musicians are more numerous than artists… Artists are human beings who demonstrate exceptional gifts and skills at what they do… Jessy does it all.” It’s just not possible to earn any higher accolade. People Always ask me...
..."why do I play music?"
The answer is easy for me... I have discovered what I was meant to do.. I LOVE to play music... I mean LOVE!!! When I have time, I enjoy practicing, and I get a thrill from recording music, have fun singing it, and run high on the vapors of performance long after it is over...

My day at the Grammy´s
Hello Everyone,
The Grammy’s were such an Amazing experience!!! I was able to hang out with some of my favorite artist and hear music from the most talented performers of today.
Here’s the shake down on the event activities:
I flew in early Sunday morning from Las Vegas (after two shows with Michael Bolton at the House of Blues)…. ran home and got ready super quick.
Then I proceeded to the Pre-Telecast (the events that you don’t see on TV, most of the Jazz Awards are recognized at this time), I had a fun time sitting with Steve Chapman and Ron Moss. And even had time to wish Gerald Albright and Earl Klugh good luck before their category nominations were presented (Best Pop Instrumental Album).
After all these actives were finished we took a stroll over to the red carpet. And this is where all the fun began! We were just chillin and everyone walked right by… Coldplay, LL Cool J, Jay Z, Jonas Brothers, Neil Diamond. I mean my head was kinda spinning!!! We watched the Ceremony then headed over the to the Grammy After Party-that was a blast! Loved every moment. I got a chance to chat it up with Bret from “Flight of the Conchords” – one of my favorite HBO shows, and even said hello to Neil Portnow, the Grammy President. All in all it was a fantastic experience and I already can’t wait for the Grammy’s next year! It’s definitely the best party/musical event I have ever been to in my whole life!!
Topics include:
The craziest thing a fan has done during a performance
How I surprise people ... and
Warm up routines...
What have you guys been up to lately? I have had the pleasure of enjoying this beautiful weather with sometime off for rest, relaxation, and recuperating from a very busy year!
Lately, I have been hitting the pool with the Masters Swim team in Pasadena, California and practicing my new horn, almost non-stop!! And also chillin out with friends....
I know the year is just getting started so I am soaking in all the fun while I can....

Oh Yeah!
Hello Everyone!
Happy 2009~
It´s a wonderful way to get a fresh start on a New Season :)
I had a happy time visiting with friends and family over the Holidays and created a fun Video blog (Vlog) of interviews and special stories and treats:
This year, topping off my resolution list-
I hope to remember to take time to smell the roses & dance like nobody´s watching, LOL!
Recently, I have been in the studio working on my second CD, it has been so much fun to be back at the creative stages, writing, performing, arranging, and being in the moment. I am very excited and honored to be working with Paul Brown on this project…he´s an AMAZING producer!
Also, I just finished up an interview for the Jazztrax Radio-on-demand show about being the Debut Artist of the Year (2008). It was so nice to catch up with OUR dear friend and strong supporter of music, Art Good. This interview will be aired next week:
Wishing you and your family happiness, joy and peace this Holiday SEASON.
This has been a Year of Dreams come true. Thank you for being apart of this journey and I hope to continue to share many more moments over the years to come…
All my Best today and always,
Love,
Jessy

There are great things to expect this season! Lots of happiness, shared times with families, reconnecting with old friends, and the joy of music to be made!
This Week my second single "Sin Ti/ Without You" was shipped across the country to all radio stations…it´s time to follow up "Tequila Moon" with a romantic & passionate Bossa Nova ("Sin Ti" in Spanish means "Without You"). It features some of L.A.´s biggest names in music, like Oscar Seaton, Paul Brown, Ricky Peterson, and Roberto Vally!!
I am so delighted to be working with Nichelle Young, my new Fan Club President. We met at the Guitars and Saxes show in Austin, Texas and immediately found that we share a similar passion for life and music. She is a hard working mother of three and a lover of Smooth Jazz. On behalf of Nichelle and myself, we would like to welcome you to join the Official Fan Club!! Nichelle has set up a website for fans to get together and do special events, meet and greets, and other fun activities…Please feel free to contact Nichelle directly if you would like more information:
Feliz Navidad, have you guys put up your Christmas Lights yet? It´s almost that time although it doesn´t quite feel like winter in this California Heat!

It´s time for the 51st annual Grammy Awards! Tequila Moon has been submitted to the long list for BEST POP INSTRUMENTAL ALBUM (038- TEQUILA MOON) and BEST JAZZ INSTRUMENTAL SOLO (142- Tequila Moon).
Yay! I love the Grammy´s and am so blessed to be a voting member this year. If you get a chance, and are apart of this world-class organization, please vote for Tequila Moon and support the Awesome Musicians on this CD.
Also recently, Concord Music Group has posted this cool new blog:
"…when I picked up the sax around 9, my teacher turned me on to Coltrane, Charlie Parker and Cannonball Adderley, and later I got into Sergio Mendes, who like my other hero Herbie Hancock was progressive and unafraid to fuse different genres together."
As promised, I have also uploaded some more video footage from the beautiful Santa Catalina Island Jazztrax Festival behind the Scenes and live show performance clips…
If you live in NY please come check out our Guitars Saxes show this weekend!

Tequila Moon
Jessy J
Wow! What a discovery! I was at the Berks Jazz Festival last week. Unfortunately, I was only able to spend two of the festival's ten days taking in music. Simultaneously I realized that Peak has released the debut of 26-year-old saxophonist Jessy J, who also was to appear at Berks as part of the Guitars & Saxes show. What a debut, from the opening throaty chords of "Tequila Moon," I knew I was going to like this woman. I'm not sure the last time I've gotten this excited over a debut by a young sax player. Jessy J, under the ever-watchful eye of Paul Brown, exhibits maturity on her instrument beyond her age. I can't help but make the comparison to Grover Washington, Jr. - and that's a good thing! The album Tequila Moon has a definite Latin lean to it, but in a very sophisticated, intense, contemporary jazz way. This album just feels different - unlike anything that's been released the last few years - smoky, intense, throaty, complex, and sexy. On top of the blowing, this girl can sing as well! This just might be the best all around contemporary jazz release of the year so far.

Jessy J
Tequila Moon
To say that singer, composer and saxophonist Jessy J is a gifted artist almost seems like an insignificant statement, in light of her exquisite debut album, Tequila Moon (Peak Records). She woos you in Spanish as she coos the words to Consuelo Velazquez´s "Besame Mucho" (with an arrangement by Paul Brown and Jessy J), and she seduces you subtly with soft and tender chords from her tenor sax, as she plays the title track, "Tequila Moon." On this CD, Jessy J also demonstrates her versatility as an artist by playing the flute ("Fiesta Velada") and the soprano saxophone ("Poetry Man," and "Running Away").
While Tequila Moon, released on March 4th, possesses a decidedly Spanish flavor, this is not an album featuring rapid-fire percussion beats, nor does it have heavy melody lines. It is instead a lighter fusion between Latin rhythms and melodic pop elements, but all the while retaining a jazz harmonic structure.
Producer Paul Brown and the management of Peak Records surrounded Jessy J with seasoned and talented musicians, such as bassist Roberto Vally (formerly of Spyro Gyra), keyboardist Gregg Karukas, and two-time Grammy winner Brown, who in addition to acting as producer plays guitar on six of the tracks. Brown enjoyed hit songs while recording with Norman Brown ("Up And At ´Em"), Euge Groove ("Get ´Em Goin´") and Peter White ("What Does It Take [To Win Your Love]").
"Besame Mucho," written by Velasquez in 1940 while still in her mid-teens, has been covered by scores of legendary singers over the years, including José Carreras, Jaõ Gilberto, Carmen McRae, Edith Piaf and Nat King Cole. In recent years, the song has been covered by Diane Schuur, Diana Krall and Michael Buble. I am told that the words "Besame Mucho" can be translated as, "kiss me a lot," or "kiss me much," and with the lilt of Jessy J´s voice mirroring her physical beauty, it would not be surprising if one were to discover that numerous men at her concerts are singing the words to "Besame Mucho" back to her. Perhaps one of the prettiest love songs ever written, "Besame Mucho" is further enhanced by Jessy J´s eloquent phrasing, Vally´s tender bassline, and Brown´s elegant guitar chording.
Listening to the twenty-six year old Jessy J weave magic with her soprano saxophone as she plays the lyrical "Running Away," which she co-wrote with Brown, and then opting for a tenor-voiced horn on Leon Russell´s "Song For You," one must ask the question: If she is already this good, how great can she become? Like Mindi Abair, Jessy J is able to serve up evocative phrases that transcend the jazz and pop genres, and in Jessy J´s case, she add some gentle Latin spices.
From the opening track "Tequila Moon," until the last notes of "Song For You" fade gently into the twilight, Jessy J´s music will charm you and hold you as a willing captive under its enchanting spell.
Thank you for your help and support of Tequila Moon...

Musical prodigy Jessy J began her journey on the piano at age four, and she enjoyed an active career as a competitive artist, traveling to perform at major conferences, competitions, and festivals. By the age of 15 Jessy was named Piano State Champion, at the Bela Bartok festival in California. At the same time Jessy was also enjoying a successful saxophone career, performing in many state honor bands, including the Grammy Band, and international festivals like the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland.
Fluent in Spanish, the Samba rhythms of Cannonball Adderley’s collaborations with Sergio Mendez awakened her Latin Roots. The “sound of the music” called to her and encouraged her to explore. As a teen she studied the recordings of Cannonball Adderley and a lifelong love affair with Jazz began.
Jessy was accepted on scholarship to University of Southern California and graduated as the “Most Outstanding Jazz Student” of her class. Since then, she went on to tour the nation in various capacities and has served as member of the Henry Mancini Jazz Orchestra and the Hispanic Musician Association (HMA) Jazz Orchestra.
Extending her skills from the dance floor, Jessy J danced and played in London and Japan with the Tony and Emmy award- winning company Blast! Intertwining various forms of creative expression was a natural fit for this vibrant artisan.
At 26, Jessy has already worked professionally with the World’s most popular artists including Jessica Simpson, Michael Buble, Burt Bacharach, the Temptations, and she is currently on tour with Michael Bolton playing sax and singing back up vocals.
Jessy’s extreme desire and ambitions have placed her on the “fast track” to success. She has recently finished a smooth jazz project produced by the “Baby Face of Smooth Jazz”, Paul Brown and was hand selected by musical genius Paquito D’Rivera to perform alongside him at Carnegie Hall for an event featuring “tomorrows star musicians”. Not only have these two multiple Grammy award winning artist sung her praise, she is currently being hailed as “Sexy, irresistible, sensible, the upcoming sax star, soulful, delightful, top notch, fresh, and terrific!”, on her latest performance with Paul Brown on his Peak recording debut “White Sand”.
Make sure you watch the one others are already talking about… Jessy J.
Great news! Just found out that I will be touring with Michael Bolton this month. The Grammy Award winning singer and vocal legend will be performing in Florida at Donald Trumps International Hotel and Towers, we will also be performing in Canada, New York, Chicago and some other great cities... it should be a wonderful show!!
Also, in stores now is Paul Browns latest CD "White Sand", which has received rave reviews... and I am featured on the title track "White Sand", please check it out if you get a chance!
love ya lots,
Jessy

Carnegie Hall
I am so elated to announce that I will be performing at Carnegie Hall for the first time with Paquito D'Rivera's Latin Jazz project. Carnegie Hall has selected individuals from all over the country to perform with Paquito and I can't wait! Paquito, is one of my saxophone heroes. His work with Arturo Sandoval and Irakere has always inspired my creative process of writing exciting and original music. Irakere was considered one of the first groups to play modern "Latin Jazz". If any of you are around New York in March it would be an honor to have you there!
What's happening? I just finished recording two tracks with an amazing band! Ricky Peterson (keys), Oscar Seaton (drums), Roberto Vally (bass), Richie Gajate-Garcia (percussion). The session was so much fun. We recorded two originals, Fiesta Velada and Sin Ti. I will be sure to post them on the web site as soon as they are ready.
I am really looking forward to my upcoming performances; Paul Brown's C.D. release party at the Vault in Downtown Long Beach. Then, later in March I will be traveling to Bermuda with Salsa Caliente to perform at the Salsa Congress. I will be sure to tell you all about it when I get back!
Hope to see you soon!
Luv,
Jessy

Beyonce Audition
Last week Beyonce Knowles announced that she would be holding a national audition for her all new female band. I auditioned here in Los Angeles at Center Staging in Hollywood while other women around the country in Houston, Chicago, Detroit, Atlanta, and New York/New Jersey were also auditioning. I was selected as the only saxophonist from the West Coast to fly to New York to audition for Beyonce, Jay Z, and many other recording executives. After an exhilarating and exhausting weekend of "jamming" with the best from around the country I feel so blessed and honored to have had such a wonderful experience! And I would like to thank Beyonce's staff and creative team for an unforgettable musical journey.

Happy New Year!!!
The Jessica Spinella Quintet had a fantastic performance at the Jazz Bakery last month. Thank you to all of you who made it out.
I´m excited to announce that my demo C.D. is finally here!!!!!!
Donald Hayes and I have worked on this project for about a year, and our hard work has really paid off! Check out some streaming clips from the demo on the media page.
Smooth Ride is an original composition of mine written while I was living in London. It represents a variety of Latin sounds and rhythms that will melt your ears and tantalize your senses…
Spanish Nights is a tune written by Donald Hayes, which incorporates elements of modern hip-hop, rhythm & blues, and Spanish sounding percussion instruments….
Hope you enjoy!!
Love,
Jessica
